HERITAGE POULTRY
We are proud to have a Sustainable Poultry Network certified flock of Barred Plymouth Rocks and Standard Bronze Turkeys. The 2 years of classes, working with breeders, visiting farms, and all the hands-on & on-going training and mentorship has been so worth it. We at Franny’s Farm are involved in the full cycle of poultry production- from breeding for genetics, incubating, brooding, chick sales, meat and egg production and processing.

The Sustainable Poultry Network is all about creating local and regional food movements, specifically with standard bred, heritage poultry for meat and eggs! The poultry that we are committed to breeding, growing and marketing are those that can naturally reproduce and be genetically maintained, they are capable of enjoying outdoor pasture and grow at a normal slow growth rate! Slow growth means strong skeletal structure, normal organ development, more muscle and texture to the meat, more nutrient and genetic strength with strong immunities. These are the kinds of birds our grandmothers raised for many generations!

CORE VALUES
Unlike most poultry today, which are genetically engineered to grow quickly and raised in unnatural confinement, all the poultry raised on our participating farms, are raised with these values:
1. Standard Bred Poultry
All of our poultry are identified by the Standards where the breed originated. Genetic lines track back multiple generations and are standard bred.
2. Natural Outdoor Environment
Birds are allowed to behave naturally in outdoor pasture, which is essential to their health and well-being.
3. Local Sustainable Farming
Farming must promote and encourage sustainability; that means that the birds must naturally reproduce and that we are not dependent upon "outside resources" for chicks, poults and eggs.
4. Ongoing Training to Farmers
Farmers are committed to networking with other local farmers and receiving ongoing education, training, coaching and mentoring.
5. Welfare of the Bird
The premise of our welfare standards is that poultry are allowed to behave naturally, ensure social interaction, comfort, and physical and psychological well being. Within our standards we believe that genetics play a very significant role in the welfare of all breeds of poultry.
6. Proper Health
Ongoing efforts to educate chefs and consumers about the nutritional and flavor benefits of standard bred, heirloom breeds of poultry.

A special thanks to Jim Adkins, our mentor, at The Sustainable Poultry Network, "an organization that is all about creating local and regional food movements, specifically with standard bred, heritage poultry for meat and eggs! We believe that the very best poultry for the kitchen tables of American families are the traditional, heirloom breeds that are recognized by the American Poultry Association. We also believe that if we are going to preserve the heritage breeds of chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, we must get them back to their production qualities.” Learn more at http://www.sustainablepoultrynetwork.com/
